Biotin

A biotin deficiency, sometimes referred to as vitamin B7, is typically accompanied by symptoms including thinning hair, dry skin, scaly rashes, brittle nails, conjunctivitis, depression, exhaustion, and numbness and tingling in the arms and legs.

Foods that are suitable for keto dieters include liver, egg yolks, pork, salmon, avocados, and cauliflower. However, the metabolism of fatty acids while on the ketogenic diet heavily depletes biotin.

In a study on animals, mice given a strict ketogenic diet after 7 weeks showed biotin deficiency. Hair loss and dermatitis (skin irritation and rashes), the normal symptoms of biotin deficiency, appeared. Because of this, the authors of this study advise anyone starting a ketogenic diet to think about taking vitamin B7 supplements.
